Exfoliate helps you automatically remove your old content from Facebook(tm). Old or forgotten content on social networking sites is a risk to your privacy. Removing this content by hand is tedious, if not practically impossible. Exfoliate helps make this much easier.

On your wall, Exfoliate can remove any post, comment, like, or photo. whether posted by you or by others. Exfoliate can remove your own posts, comments, likes, and photos, from your friends' walls too.

You can choose the age of items to remove, and Exfoliate will work to remove items that are as old or older than a time you specify.

Once you've chosen your settings, press the "play" button and Exfoliate goes to work. You can use your device for other things while Exfoliate runs and return to it later to check its progress. Exfoliate completes when it has worked through all of the content matching your settings and that is accessible at that time.

You can press the search button to scroll through your list of friends. From there, click to jump to a particular friend's wall and restart Exfoliating from there. Or, un-check the friend so that Exfoliate will not remove your items from that friends' wall. You can press the fast-forward button to skip to the next friend, and then press play to restart Exfoliating from there. If you check "Pause after Each Profile", Facebook will automatically pause after processing the current friend. Otherwise, Facebook will automatically move on to the next friend, alphabetically.

Sometimes, not all of your content is accessible on Facebook at a given time. In that case, you may wish to run Exfoliate again to process the content that it missed. Also, sometimes deleted items will still be visible on your Timeline for a while. Sometimes, clearing your browser cache and logging out and in again to Facebook helps to resolve this. Sometimes, though, it simply takes a few hours, or longer, for Facebook to update all their databases.

Exfoliate is easy to use. Here are the three simple steps:

  1. Set your preferences. Indicate the age of the items you wish removed, from where (your wall and/or friends' walls) you want the items removed, and the type(s) of items you want removed (posts, comments, likes, photos).

  2. Login to your Facebook account using Exfoliate and authorize Exfoliate.

  3. Press the "play" button to begin Exfoliating.

Exfoliate requires that you log into your Facebook account from within Exfoliate. Exfoliate uses a private instance of the built-in Android browser for this. Exfoliate neither sees nor stores your user-name and password during this process. Exfoliate does, however, use the resulting browser session to perform its work. You can rest assured that the login and session are not accessible to any other application on your device. Exfoliate uses the session solely to accomplish the deletion that you instruct it to perform. You can delete the session by clicking "MENU->Reset and Logout" at any time. Note that you should not, in general, login to any website from inside an Android app unless the app comes from a trusted source. Exfoliate pledges to never violate your trust.

Exfoliate uses web transactions to access and remove your unwanted content. To do this, Exfoliate communicates directly from your device to Facebook. Neither the makers of Exfoliate nor any third-party are ever presented with any of your Facebook information as a result of your use of Exfoliate. On your device, Exfoliate saves only the minimum amount of data necessary to perform its functions and complete the process. With a single button, you can purge all of the saved data. Exfoliate, in short, completely respects your privacy. After all, your privacy is Exfoliate's purpose.

Exfoliate attempts to find and delete all the items matching your preferences. Behind the scenes, this requires a large volume of web service transactions. This also requires a good bit of power on your device. To manage the impact, you can pause Exfoliate at any time, and restart Exfoliate later. Exfoliate, when restarted, will resume where it left off. Ideally, run Exfoliate when your device is plugged in. Also, Exfoliate may perform much faster on a WiFi network, so you may want to run it at home, through your WiFi, while you are asleep. If you have chosen to disallow background data transfers on your Android device, Exfoliate will honor this setting and thus will not be able to function as designed. You can authorize Exfoliate to do its work despite this setting by enabling the “Allow Background” setting in Exfoliate advanced settings in MENU->Settings.

Exfoliate will likely take many hours, and quite possibly longer, to complete its work. This can be especially true if you are fresh out of college, facing the job market with four or more years of forgotten social networking data scattered across hundreds of friends' walls. You can skip over friends whose walls you've not posted or commented on, or jump right to ones on which you posted a lot.
